My “random car roulette” wheel says.....

...

Mazda Navajo.

Enjoy.

At least it shares parts with the Explorer and Ranger.

ALL THE THINGS. I can’t make up my mind in general. It sounds like an advantage but without focus I am less decisive.

Price (what can you comfortably afford)? Vehicle size (do you need a big vehicle or a small one)? Main purpose (is it going to be a commuter vehicle, a daily driver or something fun for weekends that you can drive daily)? Infrequent tasks (do you occasionally have to transport items needed for work or have kids visiting that require more space) ?

Is the car for you or your wife, or both? And what are the features you’d ideally like it to have? New only? Used only? Either/or? Any particular brands you'd like to stick with?

General approach to car advice for friends:

Friend: “I need car buying advice.”

Me: (shuddering inside) “Really? What are you looking for? What do you need?”

Friend: “Well, you know, I want something practical, reliable, good mileage. I really like the Nissan GT-R.”

Me: (realizing this conversation isn’t about what it’s about) “That’s a great choice!”

I’m also in the market for used cars, and now I hate myself for paying for unlimited carfax reports. damn near everything in my budget has a salvage title or has been crashed before.

In my experience, whenever I buy something that fulfills my practicality requirements, I’m always disappointed. Whenever I blow off practicality in favor of fun, I enjoy the car so much more, even if some parts of everyday life become a struggle.

Small/Medium/Large? Two doors or four? Cheap to run? Hard top or ragtop? Get some of the big questions out of the way. Do you need to schlep kids, tools, the occasional dead body?

Coupe/liftback or extended cab pickup, preferrably manual, 2k-8k, need to transport small human on occasion

It’s for me but also needs to baby for our new niece. As you know, this current pickup is not meant to carry precious cargo. So it just has to be a coupe/liftback or extended cab pickup. Used used used. I mean just look at me. Oh yes would prefer manual but not a high priority.

Do you mean tC? In any case, does not tickle my fancy, pardon the explicit language.

tC, yes - see how overlooked it is? I forgot the name. I’ve always thought they were decent-looking little cars.

A masochist would find a low mileage SVX - you might recall I almost bought a new one back in the 90s. Auto only though.

Brown VW Jetta Sportwagen stick diesel - they might be cheap?

D’awwww!! Congrats on the new baby niece!!!

Hmmm. Trucks.... I’ll think about it for a minute. You’d think since I’m a Texan and almost everyone I know drives trucks (or SUVs), I’d have a ton of suggestions for you.

You thinking full size truck? Like a F-150, or something smaller?

My brother has a double cab Canyon. It's tiny for a truck, but surprisingly roomy and comfortable, even the rear seats. And it drives pretty nice, too. His is an auto, though.

Well not surprisingly I’m only considering the pre-facelift first gen Tacoma and a loaded T100... don’t want a fullsize and I have driven both before and enjoyed myself.

Would prefer anot old land cruiser of course but 1) don’t need it 2) driveway too narrow 3) $$$$$

I’m going to stick with my random car roulette and re-suggest the Mazda Navajo, preferably a 1994 model, because anti-lock brakes.

•It’s a Mazda coupe - with a liftback! - that can have 4WD, so that makes it better* than a Miata and RX-7.

•It’s high enough for easy ingress and egress.

•The seats slide forward enough to chuck a baby seat in the second row.

•Plenty of storage and cargo room.

•It can tow.

•It’s well within your budget.

•It’s easy enough to wrench on by yourself.

•Mechanical parts are abundant.

•It’s pre-OBDII so many states don’t require an emissions test, and there are fewer computers to screw stuff up.

•They’re fairly comfortable, for what they are.

•They’re cheap enough that you can beat on it if you want and not worry about affecting the value all that much .

It's [almost] perfect!

*better for those who don’t need it to drive around a track.
